Bicycool Library is a bike ride for book and bike lovers usually organised by librarians.
Bicycool Library is all about cycling through the town wheel to wheel with patrons.
After huge success in Poland we'd like to invite librarians from all over the world to join the project and organise rides in their countries.
Also, feel free to organise any side event you want as they only make Bicycool Library even better.
It can promote reading, bikes and libraries at the same time — isn't it great enough? :)
It can also be a great community building and library advocacy tool and of course a lot of fun!
It became very successful in Poland where we've organised it since 2010.
Only last year there were almost 100 rides and almost 3 500 partcipants all over Poland!
You can read about it in our guides.

Here you go — here are some proven ideas:
Organize ride through important places in your city or town. You can plan a route near the libraries, bookshops and other places important for book lovers. Be visible, make people who don’t participate in the ride smile. Maybe next year they will join you. :)
If you organize ride with people from other towns or villages, you can plan a route from one town or village to another. You can also visit other towns on your way.
Tell people to visit all of libraries in your town (or some of them) few days before the ride. To prove they was in each of required ones, they can collect badges or stamps. Suggest them to use bike to get to libraries. It can be training before the ride also.
Organize a contest connected with libraries and bicycles. Participants can write poems or songs about bike and book or library and biker.
Organize any contest you can imagine. For example participants can have task to carry books from one point to another. The winner is person who manage to transport most books.
Ask participants to bring with them books for bookcrossing. Prepare nice bookshelf and transport books to the place where you will finish the ride.
You can also use dublets from your library or ask people to bring books earlier. Bookshelf can be decorated by patrons, for example children.
Prepare list of book titles, ask participants to split into groups. While one of the teams is showing or drawing a title (without using words), the others are trying to guess what it is.Photo courtesy of Memphis CVB (lic. CC BY-SA)
Before you start, after finish, or during break read books together. Each of participants can read her own book or you can read loudly together. Consider using books from bookcrossing.
Spoke cards are popular during other events for bikers like critical mass. It is kind of souvenir, so many of bikers put them into their bikes’ spokes. It can remind them they took part in Bicycool Library.
This is also a great way to count participants. Put sequentially numbers on spoke cards and give them to bikers in the right order. That’s how you can get to know how many people attended the event.
Prepare small flags with Bicycool Library logo. Use sticks and pieces of paper with printed logo. You can also draw the logo. Good idea is to prepare flags together with childern — library patrons.
Oragne baloons will help to make action more visible. Give flags and baloons to participants. They can attach them to their bikes.
If you live in a beautiful natural setting, you can plan a route through the park or wood. Show participants beautiful places, enjoy nature and organize barbacue after or before the ride.
Ask participants to bring with themself food for picnic and barbecue. You can also ask restaurant or grocery store owner to sponsor food for the event — it can be an advertisement for them and for participants it is nice way of spending time together.
Among the participants there probably will be people who don’t use libraries. Organize the debate to get to know what you can improve in your library to make them use it.
Or maybe you already have in library what they need but they don’t know it? So let them know about it.
Make t-shirts or vests with logo of the project. It would be great if all of them were orange. :)
Logo will soon be available for download.
